Our first expedition designed for kids with a passion for photography, wildlife and adventure!
Head to Outback Queensland for the trip of a lifetime! In this child-friendly expedition, you will spend five days exploring the Brigalow Belt searching for the perfect landscape or beautiful animal to photograph. New to the world of photography? Don’t worry, Australia Zoo Photographer and National Geographic Explorer, Kate Berry, will be there to guide you with your new-found passion!
Kate has moulded her love for photography and the natural world into her everyday life, having completed a degree in Animal Ecology and minored in Photography at the University of the Sunshine Coast. The entwinement of ecology and photography has led her on numerous, extraordinary trips, from exploring glaciers in New Zealand to researching marine Iguanas in the mystical Galapagos Islands.
This trip isn’t just about getting that perfect shot, you’ll get the chance to go on hikes, spotlight for wildlife, help as honorary rangers and learn all about the research and conservation efforts taking place on the property.
You will be guided by Australia Zoo staff and rangers, who will point out the wonders of the reserve, making sure you get the best experience possible!
A rustic stockman's quarters will be the base of this expedition. You can choose between staying in an air-conditioned cabin or an OzTent RV-5.
This expedition has been especially designed for kids but please note, all children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a paying adult.
Departing from Australia Zoo, you will be driven through the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, further and further into the Outback until arriving at Mourachan, Australia Zoo’s conservation property. There will be plenty to see along the way! As the dirt gets redder, the more chance we have of seeing some of Australia’s distinctive wildlife. Apostle birds, galahs and red kangaroos are all a great sign you’re on your way to Australia’s famed Outback.
After making yourselves at home, you’ll be given a presentation about the property from our wonderful rangers before eating dinner under the stars, why not try some astrophotography too?
Your Outback adventure begins! After enjoying breakfast alongside our resident emus, we’ll head to different spots on the property to photograph wildlife and landscapes. Following a relaxing lunch and time to edit photos, meet some of the incredible wildlife that inhabits the area, with a talk from one of our experienced Australia Zoo team. After dinner you’ll enjoy a spotlight around camp in hopes of seeing some beautiful wildlife before calling it a night, enjoying the serenity of the Outback as you fall asleep.
After brekkie with the emus, we’re off to the township of St George where you can browse in the shops, visit the local art gallery and grab a bite to eat at the cafè.
Following exploration of the township, we will head out to experience the beauty and tranquillity of a sunset river cruise. As we drift down the Balonne River, we will be surrounded by a plethora of bird life and spectacular scenery, as the reflection of the setting sun dances across the river. This is a perfect opportunity to practice some bird and landscape photography!
After a casual morning around the Stockman’s Quarters, we’ll enjoy brunch in the bush at one of the many picturesque spots in the area. Afterwards, we’ll visit some of the historic buildings left behind from the properties past as agricultural land. These timeworn relics are a great chance to get some architectural photos and learn about the origins of Mourachan.
Late in the afternoon, our rangers will give you a damper demonstration, where you can taste an Aussie classic with a cup of tea, or try making one yourself!
We’ll make our way to the properties airstrip for sunset and watch as the colours of the Outback come to lift as, a good opportunity for some gorgeous photos before dinner.
We will pack up and begin our journey back to Australia Zoo. Everyone joining the expedition will receive a pass for entry into the zoo, so be sure to make time for a visit!
