Head to the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve for the trip of a lifetime! In this expedition, you will spend a week travelling to different spots around the pristine sanctuary searching for the perfect landscape or animal to photograph. New to the world of photography? Dont worry, Canon Collective Ambassador Colin Baker will be there to guide you with your new found passion! You’ll also be lead by Australia Zoo staff and rangers, who will point out the wonders of the reserve and make sure you get the best experience possible!
Once you’ve spent a week photographing the beauty of the reserve, it’s time to get stuck into the action! Join Steve Irwin’s personally-trained team on the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve, a pristine 335,000 acre conservation property on Queensland’s Cape York Peninsula, and observe their incredible work as they research the animals that call the reserve home.
You will be involved with Australia Zoo’s croc research, a vital component in crocodilian research and conservation – working to protect people and crocodilian species around the world. Steve Irwin began crocodile research in the 1980s, and his capture and study techniques remain the world’s best to this day.
This expedition gives you the amazing opportunity to join Steve’s crew on the largest and most successful croc research project in the world. Watch as our team of experts conduct this world-renowned crocodile research and unlock secrets regarding diet, movement patterns and much more to aid in the conservation of these incredible apex predators.
You will be picked up from Weipa Airport and transferred to the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve by crossing the Wenlock River that borders the reserve. Upon arrival, you will be given a camp induction and have time to set up camp, we like to refer to Camp Coolibah as 5 Billion Star accommodation... Just look up on your first night and you’ll see why!
Day 2 - 6
The action begins! Each morning you will depart with a photographer and a Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve Ranger to explore the reserve and search for that perfect shot!
Day 7 - 8
Enjoy a trip into the town of Weipa, a relaxing day at camp or discover what’s involved with being a Ranger on the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve.
Day 9 - 11
You will be assisting the Australia Zoo Croc Research Team with constructing croc traps, the traps that the team use were pioneered by Steve Irwin and are the most humane crocodilian capture technique, avoiding the use of dangerous drugs or harpoons. Afternoons will be spent relaxing or visiting a number of the reserves sites before assisting with ground-breaking research on Australian wildlife or listening to a lecture hosted by one of our scientists.
The Australia Zoo Rangers will take you on an action-packed adventure around the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve. With areas littered with marine fossils and beautiful bauxite springs, there’s plenty to see!
Day 13 - 16
Each morning, a team will travel by boat down the Wenlock River to check the traps... Fingers crossed there will be plenty of croc action! You will be able to help the scientists, measure the animal, complete records and of course, get up close to the worlds largest living reptile!
