Start this expedition with an exciting charter flight from Gold Coast to the beautiful beaches of Lady Elliot Island, a gorgeous coral cay located at the southern tip of Australia’s famous Great Barrier Reef. Situated within a highly protected ’Green Zone’, the island is a sanctuary for over 1,200 species of marine life and is known for its abundance of manta rays, sea turtles, amazing array of spectacular marine life and unspoilt coral reef.
From Lady Elliott, we fly over the picturesque Great Barrier Reef, and land in Cairns, where you will have the night to explore the city. The next morning, we fly to Weipa where you will join Steve Irwin’s personally-trained team on the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve, a pristine 335,000 acre conservation property on Queensland’s Cape York Peninsula. On the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve, you will be involved with Australia Zoo’s croc research trip, a vital component in crocodilian research and conservation. This expedition gives you the amazing opportunity to join Steve’s crew on the largest and most successful croc research project in the world. Watch as our team of experts conduct this world-renowned crocodile research, unlocking secrets regarding diet, movement patterns and much more to aid in the conservation of these incredible apex predators.
After an unforgettable time on the reserve, we fly to Cobbold Gorge to explore ancient geological landforms, before a quick flight to the Undara Lava Tubes, where you will spend the night and have the chance to experience some of the world’s largest and longest lava tubes. With some of Queensland’s most pristine conservation areas on the itinerary, you don’t want to miss this experience!
The expedition begins on the Gold Coast, where you will meet the pilot of Seair Pacific with your specially chartered aircraft. Lady Elliot Island is the only coral cay island with an airstrip on the Great Barrier Reef; even getting there is an adventure! When you arrive, you will have time to unpack in your eco accommodation, before diving into the water to snorkel among some of the most amazing marine life on the planet!
Day 2 - 3
Join in one of many free Island Tours including, Behind the Scenes Tour, Historical Tour and Bird Watching Tours and learn about the history, flora and fauna and operations of the eco resort.
Spend your days relaxing on the beach, snorkelling in the lagoon or taking part in many of the activities included in your expedition fee. Lady Elliot Island’s pristine and easily accessed lagoons and reefs are home to over 1,200 different species of marine life. The waters attract a wide variety of incredible large marine life, including whales, dolphins, many kinds of rays, and numerous fish.
Your adventure continues with a chartered flight from Lady Elliot Island to Cairns, the gateway to Queensland’s tropical north. You will have the night to explore the city before heading north, to the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve.
Much of Cape York is untouched and inhabited by some unique wildlife, making the flight from Cairns absolutely breathtaking! Australia Zoo Rangers will meet us in Weipa to transfer everyone to the Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve, involving a spectacular crossing of the Wenlock River. Upon arrival, you will be given an induction and have time to set up camp; we like to refer to Camp Coolibah as 5 Billion Star accommodation... Just look up on your first night and you will see why!
Day 6 - 8
Each morning we check the traps... Fingers crossed there will be plenty of croc action! You will be able to help the scientists, measure the animal, complete records and of course, get up close to the world’s largest living reptile! Afternoons will be spent relaxing, visiting a number of the reserves picturesque sites or listening to a lecture hosted by one of our scientists.
From Weipa, the Seair crew will fly you to Cobbold Gorge, a hidden oasis filled with ancient geological landforms that date back more than 135 million years. You will experience a guided tour through the magnificent sandstone cliffs, before hopping on a short flight to Undara Lava Tubes Lodge. Among the largest lava tubes in the world, the Undara Lava Tubes, in Undara Volcanic National Park in North Queensland, have led to the formation of some extraordinary underground caves.
